Here We Go Again!

On February 27, Secretary of Defense Gates stated on national news that "In my opinion, any future defense secretary who advises the president to again send a big American land army into Asia or into the Middle East or Africa should ?have his head examined,? as General MacArthur so delicately put it.?

As recounted in recent headlines, President Obama (the guy who vowed to get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan) ?Tells Qaddafi to Quit and Authorizes Refugee Airlifts.?  That quote has been followed by, a plan to dominate Libyan airspace and ?I have not taken any options off the table at this point.? Sounds like a sickeningly slippery slope to yet another war that will further bankrupt America and needlessly kill more American soldiers for no good reason.

As human beings we have a responsibility to our fellow man when they are being slaughtered, but it cannot come in exchange for getting American soldiers slaughtered in needless ground battle. Nor can we permit any military action to escalate to a point where we become occupiers ? a practice that always results in being hated as much as who we replace.  After all, for decades we installed and permitted despots, like Saddam Hussein, Qaddafi and the Saudi family to do whatever they wanted to their people.

Although I voted for President Obama I also predicted that, within 6 months of crossing inside the Capital Beltway, the same military-industrial complex that got us into Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan would swallow him up.  Borrowing from an old Pete Seeger song (?Where Have All the Flowers Gone??) ?When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn??

I was an Army Artillery Officer in the mid 1960s but any ?buck private? knows that the most powerful military force on earth cannot defeat a dedicated force of fanatics defending their own turf and sleeping in their own beds. There is no ?war front;? combatants who may or may not be wearing a uniform surround you.  The French were defeated in Vietnam long before we blundered in. The mighty Russian army was crushed in Afghanistan.  How ironic is it that, after trying to pound ?democracy? down the throats of 5,000-year-old Middle Eastern tribal cultures, to no avail, the people seem to be able to do more than all our money and ?shock & awe? ever could.

We have no business telling despots who do not threaten us, to leave office. We have no business borrowing money to fight wars for people who, by and large, despise our culture, our Judeo-Christianity, and us, yet gladly accept (and abuse) our foreign aid while we cannot take care of our own people. The 110 cruise missiles fired, thus far, cost $66 million. Add another $30 million for the F-15E Strike Eagle jet that went down this week.

So why do we keep repeating the same ungodly mistake? Paraphrasing ?Deep Throat? ?If you want to know why something happens in the world, just follow the money.?

 What do you think?
